Surviving A Road Trip With Kids

We all look forward to summer holidays, but as you may well know traveling with kids, especially on those long car rides, can require some extra patience and a lot of preparation.

Pack some easily accessible snacks for the road trip that you can just hang out when the kids start feeling peckish, such as sliced apples, bananas, rice cakes and sandwiches. Snacks that should be avoided are fresh fruit and yoghurt (very messy) and juice boxes – one too tight squeeze and you’ll have a strawberry flavored back seat.

Remember to stop somewhere every 90 or so minutes for toilet breaks and to stretch out a little too. If you’re traveling with very young children or babies who nap, plan snack and meal times around their awake times; try to find a park or quiet stretch where you can all get out of the car and get refreshed.  If your kids are a little older, try to find restaurants with play areas so the children can run around and play before setting off on the next leg of the trip.

Talk to your kids before you leave for the trip to prepare them for long stretches of driving and ask them which songs they would like to hear and make this something special for when they’re acting out (“ok be quiet for five minutes and I’ll put your song on”) or as a reward when they’ve behaved really well. Just remember that it is not up to you to keep your kids entertained for 100% of the road trip, they will need to make up their own little games to keep entertained.

My golden tip for when it seems like the inside of the car is pure noise and chaos? Switch the radio to static and turn it up really loud, you’ll be surprised by how quickly everybody goes quiet!
