Flying With Kids

Some road trips are just way too long to even consider taking with children in tow. One of the other transport options is flying, but honestly I’ve never known anyone to get excited about flying with their children. Here’s how to cope:

Plan and book your flights as early as possible to ensure that you are all sitting next to one another. Consider breaking up the journey by taking a couple of shorter flights rather than one long haul flight. Your kids will get a break from all the sitting and they’ll be able to run around the airport and visit a few shops before boarding the next plane. Make sure their favorite gadget (iPad, Nintendo, Laptop) is fully charged so they can play a game or two. Try to book flights when it’s your kids’ bedtime so they’ll be more likely to be tired and sleep on the plane.

Even though you get served meals on flights, bring some snacks along anyway. A hungry child is an unhappy child and it’s a good idea to have some food alternative just in case the airline meal does not appeal to your child. Bring their favorite quiet activities like sticker books, coloring books, puzzles and dolls to keep them occupied.

If you’re worried your kids might get rowdy and annoy fellow passengers, prepare and write out a small apology and perhaps include a chocolate or some sweets with it, you’d be surprised how far a little consideration goes towards people keeping their cool.

It’s a good idea to establish some kind of protocol with your kids for traveling between flights and airports and hotels. Something along the lines of Mom goes or gets in first then all the kids then Dad gets in last to make sure everyone has made it.
